Garden of Afruika, a cooking club focusing on Afrikan, Caribbean plant based food, started by Eryam.
Inspired by Saturday cooking clubs as a kid Eryam tells us his motivations for this space. ‘I also wanted these spaces when I was younger.
When I was younger when I was like 12 to between ages of like 15.I would get other kind of African and Caribbean chefs who are known to lead the sessions because like, well, one of them was Ethiopian, so I wanted people to know how to make Ethiopian food. You know, I'm not about to try and teach people how to make Ethiopian food. So, the most recent one I've done was at Google.
On why Eryam chose to not charge for these sessions he tells us, ‘It’s giving back just, I don't know what. When I think about it, it's just not something that I wanna necessarily make money from? I don't know how to explain. I just want it to be a thing where no one has to worry about money. You can just come and not spend your own money. So the reason why it's difficult is because it's hard to get someone or like a brand or one of these kitchens or one of these companies to buy into what I'm trying to do because let's be honest, all they care about is money.’

“I’ve learned with like my friends and family, you don’t cook enough. Consuming fast food is not good stuff, seeing people like Eddie Abbew and super popular. He’s not vegan.
Thank God for him!

"I decided to start calling some of my friends and say, come let me help you to cut your hair without going to college for these," Amad recounted, his eyes sparkling with nostalgia. "Then I started cutting people here. Then I looked at myself and said I needed to sell it to improve my skills."

Ayesha co-founder of Between2books, tells us of the importance of creating a space like this, ‘Our space provides a platform for celebrating black, brown, and underrepresented authors. It offers a community for people who might not find such connections in traditional places. Creating a literary platform that’s accessible and welcoming is vital, especially in a city like London where it can be tough to find inclusive and affordable spaces’

‘It’s both creative and strategic. Chess teaches you to be calculated, to anticipate your opponent’s moves, and to plan ahead. It’s a battlefield on a board. The strategies used in chess are akin to those employed by military leaders and strategists. This mental model is very transferable to many areas of life, including creative strategy.’
