Yusuf, Organiser of chess at Beau Beau speaks about what East London means. ‘East London, where Beau Beau is located, is all about expression.
It’s like Soho with a bit of an edge. Beau Beau has become an epicentre for youth culture in London. During the day, you might see people in suits, and at night, it transforms into a hub of creativity and fashion.” The chess club attracts a diverse crowd, including young creatives who use the space to showcase their styles and new designs.’ What pushed him to create this space? Yusuf tells us about his inspirations, ‘When I moved to London, I attended a talk by Gabriel Moses at a space called Reference Point. This talk inspired me, and I started frequenting Reference Point’s chess club. The experience of watching The Queen’s Gambit during the pandemic also fueled my interest. “I wanted to create a space similar to Reference Point, where young people could come together, play chess, and express themselves.” Initially, we met bi-weekly, then weekly, and eventually we started organising events, making playlists, and spotlighting members.’

It offers a community for people who might not find such connections in traditional places. Creating a literary platform that’s accessible and welcoming is vital, especially in a city like London where it can be tough to find inclusive and affordable spaces’

"Then I started cutting people here. Then I looked at myself and said I needed to sell it to improve my skills."
